Fun Facts About the US Flag

  • The red, white and blue colors have important meanings: Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
  • Flag on the Moon, In July 1969, Neil Armstrong placed the first U.S. flag on the moon, as part of the Apollo 11 mission.
  • The flag as we know it now was designed by a high school student, 17-year-old, Robert G. Heft, of Lancaster, Ohio.
  • The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset, except during inclement weather. It may be displayed 24 hours a day as long as it’s “properly illuminated” while it’s dark out.
  • There are more stars than stripes.
